The Taj Mahal, the vision of one person, was put together piece by piece over the course of 12 years and is still standing to this day as an inspiration to others, over 300 years later. |
It’s easy to get lost in despair and hopelessness in the current state of our world.
Wars rage on.
Innocent people are gunned down every month, week and day with no end in sight.
Rights once guaranteed are taken away… just … like … that.
We sit in our homes from the comfort of our couches, watching the news unfold day after day after day and think, “There’s nothing I can do, I am only one person.”
However, it was only one person whom refused to sit at the back of the bus… Rosa Parks.
Only one person who led the salt march… Mahatma Gandhi.
Only one person who was the first to set foot on the moon… Neil Armstrong.
Only one person whose poems inspired millions… Maya Angelou.
Only one person who was the moral conscience of South Africa… Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Only one peaceful, army-less person whom China is afraid of more than anything else... Dalai Lama.
Only one person who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean… Amelia Earhart.
Only one person who inspired a country… and the world… to stand up to Russia… President Zelensky.
Only one person who became the face of the Civil Rights Movement… Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Only one person who helped over 50 people escape slavery via the underground railroad… Harriett Tubman.
Only one person who was in prison for 27 years only to be released and elected the President of South Africa… Nelson Mandela.
We are all capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit for.
Each of these people was only one person, just like you… and you… and you… and you … and you… and you…
It only takes one person to climb a mountain and each journey starts with just a single step.
If no first step is taken… no journey can be had.
But if you take that first step, then the next step, then the next, then the next… before you know it, you’ll find yourself well on your way to the mountain top then finally, standing on the summit looking back down in awe at the tens of thousands of steps you deliberately took to get there.
Along your journey you’ll meet others on a similar path going towards the exact same mountain top.
You’ll find that if you all band together so everyone can get to that mountain top you are much stronger together and everyone’s chance of succeeding is much greater.
So, next time you look yourself in the mirror, ask yourself, “If this were my last day on earth, would I be happy doing what I’m about to do today?” If you answer no day after day after day then perhaps it’s time to get up off the couch and make some changes.
It’s easy to think, I am only one person, how can I change the world?
It’s just as easy to think, I AM one person, I CAN change the world!
